What Next? -- The Sky Is Falling by Laura Elkins

The Sky Is Falling is a painting that extends from the façade of the home of artist Laura Elkins in Capitol Hill (20 Ninth Street NE, WDC 20002) to the façade of the buildings of the Warehouse Arts Complex in downtown Washington. The work explores the notion of peripatetic art, where the viewer must travel to see the entire painting. The Sky Is Falling is part of a body of work titled HOME wRAP, which addresses life in the Age of Catastrophe.

In conjunction with the fifth annual Warehouse Peace Show -- Shock & Awe: Artists Look at War -- The Sky Is Falling is part of What Next?, the inaugural exhibition of The Private Home/Public Art Project, where artists use the outside of their homes and studios to exhibit art.

What Next? by Robert Kent Wilson

This Public Art installation by Robert Kent Wilson is the latest in a series installations the artist has installed on private residences across NWDC. This work titled "Creating Desire By Withholding" was conceptualized to be very large scale and intentionally a diptych to communicate tension between the two up close profiles. Each installation RKW produces has dual purposes; 1 provide art to the public in unexpected places and 2. Explore and test materials for future public art installations. While i am displaying number of pieces form different series (and times) i felt that they all gelled in terms of a reltionship to my front yard, the plants, the concrete, and the scale. My backyard is a graveyard of broken ( or not quite perfect) sculptures and i thought i'd mimick that feel in the front, but with choice pieces.

Great response and I hope everyone carries through. I'm also contacting artists in other cities (and other countries) to participate and encourage everyone to do the same. I think this could be really big and a lot of fun.

In DC The Warehouse Gallery Peace Show opens Tuesday, November 7 and Molly Ruppert has kindly offered that What Next? can informally share the opening at Warehouse November 7 as well. If there is room we will exhibit photos of What Next? installations, and we will definitely have a notebook with photos and info about all the projects. Drop off a plastic sleeve with a photo of your installation on one side and directions and your blurb on the other as soon as the work is up. You can leave them at Warehouse, or with me at 20 Ninth Street NE, WDC 20002 by Monday, November 6. And, of course all installations will be on the PHP Art site when you post them.

I know a lot of you live/work in rentals. Whether you do or not, I suggest you persuade friends, galleries, merchants -- any property owners you know -- to let you install on the outside of their buildings. For instance, in conjunction with the Peace Show, my installation for What Next? will begin at my home in Cap Hill and extend across the front of the Warehouse buildings.

Also some of you have voiced concerns about scale -- PHP Art can be as big or as small as you want. I've included links to other PHP Art projects that I have done to illustrate a range of project size and component size.

What Next? Private Home/Public Art Inaugural Exhibit

The inaugural Public Home/Private Art Project exhibit is titled What Next? Artists are encouraged to respond to that question. The exhibit opens Saturday, November 4, 2006. Election Day is the following Tuesday and Veterans Day observed is November 11. All artists should install work, photograph it, and post it here with Metro, directions, and contact info on or before November 4.

Although I am inaugurating The Private Home/Public Art Project with an organized exhibition and more shows will be planned in the future, I encourage artists to experiment with the concept and post and share their work at any time.
